The student population in the NE Program at Rensselaer is distinctive; the students individually and collectively are highly motivated, capable, hardworking and dedicated, reflecting the qualities of engineering students accepted to Rensselaer in general. Recent admissions data for Fall 2007 suggest that the incoming freshman class in the MANE Department has one of the highest average SAT scores and average high school rankings in the School of Engineering.
First-year students are admitted to Rensselaer by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions based on performance on standardized tests and their high school programs. Students admitted to Engineering may choose to major in any branch of engineering. Although students indicate their preferences at the time of admission, they are not required to designate a major until the third semester. Undergraduate student enrollment data is shown in Section IIN. Similar to the national trend, the enrollment in our NE program has been steadily increasing in recent years. 
Like most educational institutions, homework assignments, examinations, presentations, and written reports are evaluated by the faculty teaching the courses. In addition, especially in the design courses, additional NE faculty and industrial consultants also provide supplemental reviews. For example, in the two-semester Capstone Design course, several NE faculty members supervise the projects throughout the year and attend the final presentations given by the student design teams. The students are evaluated by a team of NE faculty in several important aspects of the design course.
